In order to make known about the availability of fantastic surgeons and infrastructure in K.G. Hospital in the area of Orthopaedics, an International Conference titled "ORTHOCON 2005" was organized in the hospital on 20th November, 2005.
On this auspicious occasion, K.G. Joint Replacement Centre was inaugurated under the Chairmanship of Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman, K.G. Hospital. Mr. Mike Connor, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy Commission, Chennai, inaugurated the Conference. The Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director of Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, was the invited faculty for the international conference. The conference was conducted due to the combined efforts of Prof. Dr. A. Sakthivel (Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, K.G. Hospital) and Dr. S. Venkat, M.Sc. (Ortho - London), FRCS, Birmingham, U.K. Dr. Andrew Thomas, FRCS, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, U.K., delivered lectures on Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, Elbow Replacement and Shoulder Replacement.
Dr. Andrew Thomas demonstrated Birmingham Hip Replacement from the operation theatre to 120 delegates in the auditorium through two-way audio visual linkup. Dr. Vijay C. Bose, FRCS, M.Ch. (Ortho), Apollo Hospital, Chennai, moderated the demonstration. He also gave a personal lecture on his personal experience on "Hip Resurfacing". Dr. Venkat too gave lectures and showed live demonstration of Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement through audio visual linkup.
Prof. A. Sakthivel gave a talk about his personal experience on Joint Replacement Surgery at K.G. Hospital.
Arrangements have been finalized for Dr. S. Venkat to visit and organize meetings, seminars and training sessions twice a year at K.G. Hospital with participation of faculty from the United Kingdom to provide personal training for the orthopaedic surgeons and para medical staff to achieve excellence in Joint Replacement Surgery. Prof. Sakthivel will coordinate these activities.
