A Rare Heart Surgery
Big Tumor Excised from Heart
Life Saved
A rare complex heart surgery was successfully performed by Dr. T. Jayarama Pai, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, K.G. Hospital, on a 45 year old man of Namakkal at K.G. Hospital, Coimbatore.
Mr. Karuppannan, S/o Mr. Muthusamy, was referred to KG Hospital. The man was found to have a very big size (6cm x 6cm) LA Myxoma - size of an orange - (Tumor inside of left upper Chamber of the heart), which is a very rare anomaly.
A myxoma is a primary heart (cardiac) tumor. This means that the initial site of the growth was within the heart, which is uncommon with heart tumors. This must have spread from elsewhere in the body (metastasized).
Primary cardiac tumors are rare, but among them, myxomas are the most common. About 75% of myxomas occur in the left atrium, usually beginning in the wall that divides the upper chambers of the heart (atrial septum) and growing into the atrium. However, right atrial myxoma may also occur.
Myxomas are more common in women.
Approximately, 10% of all myxomas are familial, which means that they were genetically inherited. Familial myxomas tend to produce symptoms at a younger age than non-familial tumors and are often multiple, i.e. they are present in more than one site within the heart and can include the ventricles (lower heart chambers).
Symptoms
Symptoms may occur at any time, but most often, they accompany a change of body position. Symptoms may include:
- Shortness of breath with activity
- Breathing difficulty when lying flat
- Breathing difficulty when asleep
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Sensation of feeling your heart beat (palpitaion)
- Chest pain or tightness
Surgical repair consists of excising the tumor under cardiopulmonary bypass (stopping the heart and lung function). Mr. Karuppannan was operated successfully on 5th January, 2005 and now he is doing well. He has been shifted to the ward from ICU and he will be discharged within a few days. The family members of Mr. Karuppannan are very happy and expressed their gratitude to Dr. Jayarama Pai, Cardiac Surgeon, and Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman of KG Hospital.
