Brain-dead man gives new lease of life to 4

Fifty two year old Sujatha from Delhi and fifty five year old Sengodan from Thiruchengode were the recipients of Manohar's Kidneys and his eyes were donated to two poor patients from Namakkal. Manohar's liver was taken to Hyderabad for a transplant.

Coimbatore, July 15: The doctors of the KG Hospital here have successfully transplanted multiple organs of 32-year-old Manohar, a "brain-dead" accident victim recently.

The transplanted organs gave a new lease of life to at least four patients who were suffering from failure of liver and kidneys.

The Chairman of KG Hospital, Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam told this newspaper that Manohar, a coolie and also a political party worker from Thadagam, near here, was admitted to the hospital with severe head injuries after a head on collision. He was traveling on a two-wheeler when he was hi head-on by a van, a week ago.

Even after the clot in his brain was removed, there was no scope of his survival. When the pupils of his eye showed no movement even after the ventilators were removed, Manohar was declared brain dead.

Counsellors at the hospital spoke to his wife about donating his organs. "His family lacked awareness about organ transplantation, and how it could give life to others suffering from various ailments," the doctors said and added that they eventually agreed to donate the organs, as brain dead patients do not survive for more than three or four days, the organs were removed within eight hours of declaration. The police, notary public and lawyer were also informed about the donation. Transplant surgeons usually prepare in the operating room or during removal of the recipient's organs.

Fifty two year old Sujatha from Delhi and fifty five year old Sengodan from Thiruchengode were the recipients of Manohar's kidneys and his eyes were donated to two poor patients from Namakkal. Manohar's liver was taken to Hyderabad for a transplant. Although hospitals perform single organ transplants, there are very few which perform multi-organ transplants across the state.

The KG Hospital is the first in the region to perform such a transplant, Dr. Bakthavathsalam added.

Stating that organs were removed largely from accident victims, Dr. Bakthavathsalam said "The potential donors are those between the age group of 20 and 55 and they are more prone to road accidents. There are about one lakh people in the country awaiting eye transplantation and only 20 centers across India perform this procedure. Similarly two lakh are awaiting kidney transplantation. It is unfortunate that there has been no linking force between the demand and supply of organs."
