KG Hospital – a tradition of quality and compassion

K G Hospital, Coimbatore, plays a leading role in providing affordable and qualitative healthcare for all

IN recent times numerous multi-specialty hospitals have mushroomed, offering worldclass facilities albeit with a hefty price tag attached. But there are a few that strive to provide sophisticated treatment facilities while simultaneously holding steadfast to their mission of serving the common man. K G Hospital, Coimbatore, is one such super-specialty and multi-specialty facility that offers a variety of quality healthcare services at surprisingly affordable costs. Founded by K Govindaswamy Naidu and run by the K Gocindaswamy Naidu Medical Trust, a non-profit charity organisation of the $150 million K G Group, it was the first super-specialty hospital started in South India. What initially began as a 20-bed hospital in 1974 has today grown into a hi-tech 500-bed facility.

Since its inception, KG Hospital has swiftly gained a reputation of being one of the finest medical centres in the country and has developed into a completely self-contained healthcare unit. The hospital boasts modern diagnostic and treatment facilities, highly sophisticated equipment and a competent, dedicated staff of over 250 doctors, 800 nurses and 200 paramedical staff.

Speaking on the vision guiding the hospital, Chairman Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam says, “Our Primary mission is to save patients, irrespective of their paying capacity. In fact, 20 percent of our patients are given free treatment and about 25 percent receive heavy subsidies, ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh. “The hospital is a beneficiary of the Prime Minister's and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Relief Fund for providing medical relief to the poorer segments of society. It also receive Rs 25 lakh every year from its medical trust, but given the high costs involved, it is still a delicate economic balancing act for this charitable institution to remain true to its goal of not working for profits.

The hospital is recognised by the Government, the Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai and the National Board, for conducting medical research. It is also a recognised Centre for post-graduate courses in 12 medical super specialisations including general medicine, general surgery, neuro surgery, orthopaedics, neurology and radio diagnosis, besides being a centre for nursing education. Additionally, K G Hospital is the designated blood bank for nearly 200 hospitals located in Coimbatore and its adjoining areas.
